The Real Experience
The Confession Box is situated in the heart of Dublin in the shadow of the Pro-Cathedral and near the spire and Luas. The Confession Box is the authentic cosy Dublin pub frequented by local Dublin regulars and many repeat visitors from afar. You will immediately feel at home and are invited to relax or join in the banter and the craic. This historic pub was recently renovated and is run by the friendliest of Dublin bar staff who promise an enjoyable and comfortable visit. With coverage of major TV sport events and great weekend all tastes are catered for.
In the year of the war of Independence (1910-21) rebel volunteers under Michael Collins were being hunted by british secuirty forces and were ex-communicated by the church hierachy. No.88 Marlborough St. then 'The Maid of Erin' public house, was used by sympathetic clergy so that the rebels might recieve the sacrements and make their confession in secret rooms. It is this, the small size of the pub and its proximity of the pro-cathedral that led to its becoming known locally as 'The Confession Box'.

The Story Behind A Pub Called The Confession Box
THE Confession Box at No 88, Marlborough Street has scooped the title of Dublin’s Best Bar for the second year running, coming out tops in 98FM’s Best of Dublin search. Proud owners Pauline and Monica Keenan will have owned the bar since 2010. The award-winning sisters know Dublin city very well, having worked here for many years.
During the 1919-21 War of Independence, rebels under Michael Collins, sought refuge here and made their confessions to sympathetic clergy in secret rooms. Then called The Maid of Erin, its small rooms and proximity to the Pro-Cathedral led to it become known as The Confession Box. One of the smallest bars in Dublin, it is situated in the heart of Dublin beside the Pro-Cathedral and near the Spire and Luas. This authentic cosy Dublin pub is frequented by local regulars and returning visitors from afar.
